SXSW 2017 Highlights That Grabbed Our Attention

This year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference & Festivals has come and gone, but we are still geeking out over some of the hottest topics that were discussed and explored during the event. When innovators, visionaries, and creative artists come together, how can you not get excited about the ensuing exchange of ideas? SXSW is a testament to the fact that surprising discoveries can happen when the best ideas and the most passionate people come together. In case you missed it, we are rounding up some of the happenings you might find interesting.

Interactive Innovation Awardees

When it comes to innovation, SXSW covers a lot of ground. This means acknowledging everything from engaging mobile apps to groundbreaking 3D printing technologies. The panel of judges, composed of industry experts, based their selection of winners on four criteria – creativity, form, function and overall experience.  In total, there are 13 category winners and seven special honorees (which include a meme of the year honor for Prankster Joe Biden). For the complete list of awardees, head to the SXSW website.

Biden Called on Innovators to Join the Fight Against Cancer

Speaking of the former Vice President, Biden went on stage for the Featured Session and delivered a passionate speech imploring tech leaders to be more involved in cancer research. He challenged everyone in the audience to use their talents and help make a “gigantic impact” in the ongoing battle against the dreaded disease. He also shared how his son’s death from brain cancer spurred him into action to launch his anti-cancer initiative.

Best Games of the Year Unveiled

SXSW isn’t just about innovations in tech, movies, and music; it is also about showcasing the best that the gaming industry has to offer. At the SXSW Gaming Awards, creators were given the spotlight through the following categories:

Game of the Year (which went to Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End – Sony Computer Entertainment / Naughty Dog)

Mobile Game of the Year (Pokémon GO – Niantic)

Esports Game of the Year (Overwatch – Blizzard Entertainment)

Tabletop Game of the Year (Arkham Horror: The Card Game – Fantasy Flight Games)

Trending Game of the Year (Overwatch – Blizzard Entertainment)

Fan Creation of the Year (Brutal Doom 64 – Sergeant_Mark_IV).

At the SXSW, each sector presents their own unique perspective and ideas. When brought together, they establish a creative environment where innovations and solutions are achieved. To the organizers,  keynote speakers, and all the people and organizations involved, NarraSoft salute your continued efforts to foster creative and professional growth in various industries. We look forward to being part of the SXSW events in the future.
