Epic Games Acquires the Team Behind Fall Guys Mediatonic

Popular gaming brand Epic Games has officially bought the company behind the pandemic hit Fall Guys (2020). Growing from a team of only 35 members to a group of more than 150, Mediatonic recently announced it can “take [Fall Guys] to new (dizzying) heights” with the Fortnite developer, they said in a post.

“With Epic, we feel like we have found a home that was made for us,” Tonic Games Group CEO and co-founder David Bailey said in a post by Epic Games. “They share our mission to build and support games that have a positive impact, empower others and stand the test of time and we couldn’t be more excited to be joining forces with their team.”

Epic Games and Fall Guys Team Mediatonic: No Change in Gameplay

Several fans, however, wanted to know whether a change in ownership entailed a change in Fall Guys’ gameplay. Fortunately, both companies addressed this concern and stated in their posts Fall Guys’ gameplay will remain the same. The people behind Fall Guys will “continue to be the same team, working on the same game,” Mediatonic said.

Additionally, the game will still be available on Steam and the PlayStation. Both groups have also confirmed Fall Guys will be available on the Nintendo Switch and Xbox soon.

Expanding the game’s cross-platform accessibility aligns with Mediatonic and Epic Games’ goal of expanding Fall Guys’ reach. They want to make sure the game is accessible to as many players as possible. However, Mediatonic said there is currently no announcement regarding adopting a “free-to-play” model.

What Epic Games and Fall Guys Have In Store for Fans

Released in August 2020, Fall Guys is a multiplayer game where players’ wins depend on how long they survive the game’s random obstacles. Their original obstacles include race minigames, team minigames, and survival minigames, among others. Since their initial release, Fall Guys has launched two subsequent seasons. The fourth season Fall Guys 4041 is in the works.

As for plans with Epic Games, Mediatonics reveals they intend to integrate features from Epic Games’ Fortnite (2017) and Rocket League (2015), which Epic Games had also bought in 2019. According to Mediatonic’s post, the features they wish to incorporate include account systems, squad vs. squad modes, and cross-play.

According to both parties, their shared goals and vision for the gaming industry are some of the things that brought them together. “It’s no secret that Epic is invested in building the metaverse and Tonic Games shares this goal,” Epic Games CEO and founder Tim Sweeney said. “As Epic works to build this virtual future, we need great creative talent who know how to build powerful games, content and experiences.”

With the level of creativity and impact these companies are capable of, we can certainly look forward to the kind of games that result from their teams’ cooperation.

Fall Guys: A Breakout Star During the Pandemic

Fall Guys has been hailed a breakout star and runaway success since its initial launch in August 2020. According to Steam Database, the multiplayer game’s peak concurrent players totaled some 172,000 players, with more than 8,500 players reaching the 24-hour peak.

Currently, the seasons’ titles are:

  • Ultimate Knockout (Season 1)
  • Medieval Knockout (Season 2)
  • Winter Knockout (Season 3)
  • Fall Guys 4041 (Season 4)

In the Ultimate Knockout, a few of the minigames include fan favorites, such as Gate Crash and The Whirlygig. According to PC Gamer, Medieval Knockout showcases Middle Ages-inspired game art and minigames, including Knight Fever, Wall Guys, and Hoopsie Legends. As for Winter Knockout, the Fall Guys team brings a whole new collection of themed minigames, such as Tundra Run, Ski Fall, and Freezy Peak, an article in AllGamers says.

Epic Games: The Most Searched and Most Popular Gaming Brand

Recently, Fortnite creator and Unreal Engine developer Epic Games secured another win. According to research conducted by and published in Businessfinancing.co.uk, Epic Games had reportedly amassed the most number of searches on Google in the industry, making it the most popular gaming brand. The company had even surpassed Nintendo Games, a beloved gaming company operating for over a century.

Over the years, Epic Games has made a conscious effort to expand their work. Not only have they produced popular game titles, they have also successfully managed to build a game engine known for developing triple-A games. This tells us how vital it is for gaming companies, and other businesses in general, to make good use of the trends in their niche. And with Epic Games and Mediatonic — two knockout video game companies — merging, we can expect a collaboration of epic proportions.

In Summary

Epic Games recently bought Mediatonic, the creator of the hit video game Fall Guys. Since Mediatonic is now part of the Epic Games family, fans of the multiplayer game can expect game upgrades and features similar to other franchises Epic Games owns. These franchises include Fortnite and Rocket League.

Both parties also plan to expand Fall Guys’ reach. So far, there is no update on adopting a free-to-play model. However, the game will soon be available on the Nintendo Switch and Xbox.

The Fall Guys team will upload the release date trailer for Fall Guys Season 4, or Fall Guys 4041, on March 15 (Monday).
